I have yet to travel anywhere in the world where people drop paired things together. It is always one sock, one glove, one mitten, one shoe, one sofa pillow in the middle of the motorway. When life is confirmed on Mars, a powerful satellite may well pick up images of these things in threes, and the mystery will be solved.
